# Mobile Apps and Bluetooth

Choose the app according to the reader's connection, not just the phone's operating system.

| Connection | App | Hardware needed |
| ---------------------- | ---------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Android USB host / OTG | MTools | Main reader board and USB data cable / adapter |
| Android or iOS BLE | MTools BLE | Compatible BLE extension |
| Bluetooth Classic SPP | Compatible SPP host software | SPP-capable extension |

## Android USB with MTools

1. Install [MTools](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tk.toolkeys.mtools).
2. Set the board to USB and RUN where applicable.
3. Connect through a USB host / OTG adapter if the phone requires one.
4. Allow MTools to access the USB device when Android prompts.
5. Place a compatible tag on the antenna and use the app's card-reading tools.

MIFARE Classic memory access requires the appropriate sector keys. A tag UID alone does not grant access to protected blocks. Refer to the [MTools user guide](https://docs.mtoolstec.com/mtools-app/mtools-app-user-guide) for app workflows.

## BLE with MTools BLE

1. Attach the compatible extension with the boards powered off.
2. Power the reader and select BT mode.
3. Install MTools BLE from [Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mtoolstec.mtoolsLite) or the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mtools-ble-rfid-reader/id1531345398).
4. Enable Bluetooth and grant the app's requested permissions.
5. Scan and connect within MTools BLE, then select the appropriate tag tool.

BLE discovery is performed in the app. A Classic SPP pairing entry does not establish a BLE connection. Extension names and supported transports vary by hardware revision.

## Troubleshooting

If the reader is absent, confirm that the extension supports BLE and is powered. Disconnect other phones before retrying. If commands fail after connection, check the selected transport, extension compatibility, and whether another app owns the reader.

Use [TAG Scanner](https://docs.mtoolstec.com/how-to-use-tag-scanner) for supported UID-scanning workflows. For wired diagnostics, return the board to USB and use [Connect and Scan](/hardware/rfid-nfc-and-uhf-hardware/all-in-one-pn532/quickstart.md).
